Teams Duke It Out in Eighth Annual Restaurant Olympics

(DEWEY BEACH, Del.) - Great hospitality skills will get you far in Delaware's coastal restaurant scene but what about your athletic skills?

Dozens of people from local bars and restaurants took the day off Tuesday to compete in the sporting event of the season, the eighth annual Restaurant Olympics.

Hosted by the Dewey Business Partnership, teams from different restaurants are pitted against one another in a series of games and relay races, all vying for a chance to go for the gold.

"It's just a great of fun for everyone to come out," said Kelly Ranieri, founder of the DBP. "We worked hard all summer. It's August. So it's a great time for people to connect, have a lot of fun and just really just have a great time on the beach."

Everything from speed, agility, strength, and even cheerleading skills are put to the test challenge after challenge.

"We are the referees today so we're taking care of making sure everything's done right, everybody's following the rules and having a good time," said Willie Makowski, a local restaurant industry worker.

The event is expecting to raise over $3,000, all of which goes back into the DBP which helps bring family friendly and community events to Dewey Beach.

Former mayor Pat Wright said events like the Restaurant Olympics are what Dewey is all about.

"I'm a former mayor. This was not around when I was in office. It's just so many events that are doing so well showing people that we're a resort that's family, friendly," said Wright.

The winning team in first place was the Starboard, followed by the Bottle and Cork, northbeach and Woody's in fourth place.
