(WICOMICO COUNTY, Md.) - "She's saying my kids are in there, I just run in there."
The left side of a two family home gets damaged last night when a fire starts in the kitchen. Michael Conaway was in the neighborhood visiting friend when the flames broke out.
Michael run inside the house, but has to turn around once he gets to the kitchen. He goes back outside, finds a brick, tells the kids to get away from the bedroom window, and asks their mom if he can break it.
"She was kind of hesitant at first because those are her kids, but then she said ok so I threw the brick threw the window."
Michael, the kids mother, and a neighbor next door start clearing glass from the window and were able to get the kid's out.
Michael credits God for saving the children's' lives.
"I just dropped down to my knees and thanked the Lord that he made me able, and willing and ready-and courage-and he just gave it all to me to do this. So, I'm blessed," Conaway tells WRDE.
And the children's mother did not want to talk on camera, but she did say that Michael didn't think twice about saving her kids.
Fire Safety experts say keep doors while you're sleeping in case there's a fire. Closed doors make harder for fires to spread as quickly. The kids who were rescued knew this, and closed the bedroom door once they saw they could not get out.
