Water Spouts Near Tangier Island Attract Eyes On Delmarva

(DEWEY BEACH, Del.) - "Wow" was the reaction from most people who looked at pictures of two massive water spouts that formed in the Chesapeake bay near Tangier Island Monday.

For some the sight was, "really scary."

But for lover of atmospheric meteorology, Doug Isaac not so much.

"I love thunderstorms and any kind of weather phenomenon of that kind," he said. "I'd probably start driving toward it, instead of away from it."

Jim Steel, who's out in the water fishing every day, says he's seen several before.

So the two that popped up near Tangier Island are no big deal to him.

"I wasn't impressed one way or another with it," Steel said surely. "It's just a part of weather."

But it was the opposite for Philadelphia native, Sabrina Bell who said if she were to see one in-person, she'd have to pull out her phone for a good ol' selfie.

"I'd be running out to take pictures," Bell said with a large smile plastered across her face. "I'd be that one."

Water spouts can look fun and they can even be fun, if you're in to taking selfies with them, but they can also be downright dangerous.

WRDE meteorologist Christopher Swaim says they're generally harmless in fair weather.

But if winds are beefed up he's advising you, "not to go near them. They could still cause a bit of damage to your watercraft. They generally don't make landfall when they're fair weathered."

But when they do -- they can do some damage.

Just last year a bouncy house full of kids was thrown into the air after a water spout stormed onto land in Florida.

So folks be on the lookout for wild wind whipping water.
