LEWES, DE — On Sunday, the community joined members of the U.S. Army Reserve 946th Transportation Company at St. Jude church for a dinner and deployment ceremony for the U.S. soldiers deploying to Fort McCoy.

At 3:10 p.m., 100 troops set off for the army base in Wisconsin, for one year, to help 13,000 Afghan refugees integrate into the United States.

"In the process, we are going to be serving people who served with us overseas. putting as much on the line as we have in Iraq or Afghanistan. for us to be able to go there to support them, it's a wonderful feeling," Sgt First Class Daniel Sullivan said.

Volunteers in the Lewes community donated: U.S. flags, water, snacks to the U.S. army in a 3-day preparation that started on Nov. 5, followed by Sunday dinner.

Troops expressed their appreciation for the gesture, ahead of a multiple-day journey.

"We appreciate all the support that we've gotten from the local community, from the chain of command, and that we're honored to get this opportunity to continue to serve," Captain John Barbato said.
