MILLSBORO, Del.- A World War II veteran pays tribute to fallen colleagues.
Thomas Creekmore served in the 8th Air Force during the war. He was a part of a mission of about fifty thousand men to attack Germany. He says 26,000 died and that is who he is honoring this Memorial Day with flags, flowers, crosses, and a wreath in his front yard. Creekmore recalls some of his experiences that he will think about this Memorial Day.
"It was seven o’clock or eight o’clock in the barracks," Creekmore said. "It was kind of depressing when the sergeants came from headquarters and cleaned out four or five of the men’s took out their foot lockers and their clothes and pictures of their girlfriends or wives up on the shelf because they didn’t come back that day."
The National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force in Pooler, Georgia is honoring the men that lost their lives through its Flags For The Fallen event. A 48 star flag for each person that died has been placed in the memorial gardens there with ceremonies being held throughout the weekend.
