MILFORD, Del.- Blue skies, a sunny day, but trash in the parking lots and streets of Milford.
The litter can be unattractive to people visiting the area for leisure, shopping, or other activities.
Workers in trucks were frequently stopping at dumpsters in five different locations dropping off bags filled with garbage.
Ward IV Councilmember & Vice Mayor Jason James says the annual cleanup was unable to be held last year because of the pandemic which made this year’s event even more important.
"We may have had more people if not for COVID, but we had a good turnout," James said. "It was over 100 people throughout the city. So, it was a choice that we made but we thought it was OK since the conditions are better and people are masking up and we know social distancing helps and outside helps a lot."
Volunteers were assigned to groups of ten to twenty-five in different areas. James says cleaning up parts of the city will make it more attractive and hopes in turn more people will visit Milford.
"Trash collects, wind blows and when you come into a city and see trash right then and there it gives it a negative appearance," James added. "We want people to want to be here. We want our citizens to have a nice place to be and nothing does it like a good cleanup."
At the Arena’s dumpster alone, 2800 pounds of trash were collected after the two and a half hour cleanup.
