Beach Town Businesses Boom During Fourth Of July Weekend

SUSSEX COUNTY, Del.- Saturday night in the nation's summer capital was aglow as fireworks lit up the sky and the boardwalk had people shoulder to shoulder.

"They were so excited to be at the hotel and the restaurant," Cobb said. "Of course the beach and the boardwalk. A lot of great families and a lot of happy faces. It was good to see."

Kelly Kotche of Gambrills, Maryland made her second trip to Rehoboth Beach over the weekend. Her first was last summer. She says it is a very different and encouraging experience for the economy.

"To see the crowd just on the beach and everybody kind of packed in and then waking up the next morning and seeing umbrellas that were like literally packed in sardines umbrella to umbrella to umbrella," Kotche said. "Big difference in attitude about COVID and the pandemic."

On Sunday, downtown Lewes was booming. It all started with the boat parade on the canal, followed by the Doo Dah Parade and it was capped off with fireworks on the beach.

Fun activities that everyone could be a part of whether it was decorating a boat or a float.

Owner of Jeff West Home Jeff West was lucky to see some of the festivities himself as customers were waiting to get into his store.

"I snuck over to the boat parade real quick and they were waiting on me when I got back," West said. "I assumed everybody would be at the boat parade but they got back early so I was grateful you know it's good to see that. Business has been good all year really."

Celebrating independence and normalcy and hoping the summer can continue to be jam-packed along the coast.
