Bethany Beach to Address Pet Waste Problems

BETHANY BEACH, Del.- The town of Bethany Beach is considering cracking down on those who don't clean up after their pets.

Mayor Lew Kilmer tells WRDE that the town considering adding signage, increasing education, and upping the fine for owners who don't pick up after their animals. These ideas will be considered during a town council workshop later this month.

Dog owners like Marjorie McLean say the efforts are badly needed.

"It's a shame people don't pick up. I don't know what they are thinking," she says. "There are doggie bags that they could use and it just hurts the people who do want to keep their dogs active on the boardwalk and beach from thinking they are going to stop it someday."

Bob Parsons says it's been a problem for years, but wonders if a fine will be effective.

"Fining and things like that seem in other areas of law enforcement not to be deterrents," he says.

Bethany Beach currently fines pet owners between $25-75 dollars for leaving waste behind. Mayor Kilmer says the council plans to meet on January 24th to discuss the issue further.
