(Virginia Beach, Va.)- A sailboat slams into the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel after losing power early Thursday morning, according to bridge officials.
Only one person was aboard the 35-foot vessel at the time of the crash. A preliminary investigation shows the boat struck the southbound span coming out of the Chesapeake Tunnel after its sail broke at around 4:48 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 13.
The boater was unable to start up the engine before hitting the bridge-tunnel's pilings, according to Coast Guard Station Little Creek in Virginia Beach.
The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel's director of operations, Chief Edward Spencer, said the lone boater wasn't injured. He also said the bridge-tunnel was not damaged.
WRDE has learned the person who was aboard the sailboat was the captain. His name was not released. Rescue crews helped the captain untangle the sail and to restart the engine.
