LEWES, Del.- Getting medical marijuana is about to get easier in Sussex County.
Canna Care Docs will begin operating in Lewes on Fridays starting on March 1st. The company helps qualified patients receive medical marijuana certifications by providing a referral to the state and recommendations and education to the patients.
"We have a really passionate team. We pay attention to detail and we educate each and every patient," says Canna Care Docs' Regional Manager Erica Pukatsch. "We provide education to our patients and it's tailored to their experience."
Pukatsch says the company is excited to assist patients in Sussex County, especially in a downtown Lewes location.
"At this point 25 percent of our patients that come to Wilmington [where Canna Care Docs has a facility] are from the Lewes area so we are very excited to get down state," she says.
Many people in Lewes expressed support for the facility.
"I think it's very important that folks have access to that because I know it does help them," says Frances Rogers. "So I think its a good thing to have [and will] add something else to the community."
Lloyd's Market owner Darren Purcell is optimistic for the facility as long as it is monitored.
"Honestly it could go 50/50," he says. "As long as they follow the rules and regs, I really don't see a problem."
Representative Steve Smyk says Canna Care Docs will provide a critical service, but it's important that it is properly regulated, especially as the owner of a similar establishment was charged with tampering with public records last year.
"I welcome this," Smyk tells WRDE. "This is a good thing if it's run correctly because of what happened [in the past]."
Canna Care Docs' website states all medical providers working with the company "are licensed and authorized to practice medicine in their respective states and are in full compliance with those state's medical cannabis programs. They all possess an extensive, working knowledge of medical cannabis benefits."
Canna Care Docs' says it plans to host a town hall with the public to answer any questions. For more information, people may visit its website.
