DELMARVA-- Now is the perfect time to bring home your new best friend.
From August 23rd to September 19th, NBC stations across the country, including WRDE, are inviting you to "Clear the Shelters."
A number of local rescues and shelters are offering waived or reduced adoption fees, or special outreach events, all in the hopes of getting more animals into their forever homes.
"The idea is that you do actually clear the shelters and people come out for that definitely," says Delaware Humane Association Executive Director Patrick Carroll. "We still use our normal process of having a conversation with each potential adopter about what is the best fit for them so we make sure its a good fit and a good home for them."
This year, the Clear the Shelters campaign also includes donating. Shelters say anything-- be it adoption, awareness, volunteering, donating or fostering--helps address the increased need our homeless pets have.
Arynn Brucie at the Brandywine Valley SPCA says the timing of this campaign is purposeful.
"We are doing more transports; people are going on vacation so adoptions do slow down a little bit," she tells WRDE. "This Clear the Shelters is really great to highlight that, and good timing. Definitely good timing."
WRDE will be publishing a number of special stories during the Clear the Shelters campaign, including an adoptable Pet of the Day. For more information, click here.
