DELAWARE- Significant progress in containing the spread of COVID-19.
There were 42 new positive cases over the last seven days and forty hospitalizations. After the state was open Memorial Day Weekend, Governor John Carney feels relieved.
"There was a lot of activity," Carney said. "There was a lot of people that were just kind of feeling the freedom and relief and rightly so. And so many of them were vaccinated so we are in a different place."
That activity is expected to continue as the summer rolls along and there is concern about some of the younger age groups where people are not getting vaccinated. Dr. Karyl Rattay reported that just 32 percent of individuals twelve to 17 received one dose while the 18 to 34 group is just under forty percent.
"We are going to continue to be focused on this young adult population that likely is the most vaccine hesitant," Dr. Rattay said. "In fact, it looks like our teenagers may surpass or young adults in the not too distant future as far as vaccine rates."
During the briefing, the winner of the Wilmington Blue Rocks luxury suite was announced and Governor Carney wants teenagers to know they can win too if they get vaccinated.
"Be a part of the team. Get vaccinated. Protect yourself, your family and others," Carney said.
