DELAWARE- Learn here. Work here. Live Here. The roadmap that the Delaware State Chamber of Commerce (DSCC) will have more of a hand in for young people and their futures.
Through the Intern Delaware program, 21 companies have set up internships centered around the benefits of living in Delaware. Participants don't just learn skills in their particular field, but they find out what makes the state great in the process.
DSCC President Michael J. Quaranta hopes a majority of the one thousand members of the chamber will be able to use current programs or create programs to assist in the effort.
"The more employers that will start these kinds of programs the better it is for them and I know that there is a number of employers when you get to Kent and Sussex Counties you know where it's a little challenging to recruit," Quaranta said.
The owners of the Canalside Inn in Rehoboth Beach started their own internship program last April. They say although their interns are working remotely, they are learning skills to help them in the future. Bryan Deptula pointed out one of their interns who graduated from the University of Delaware was hired to a full-time position at the bed and breakfast.
"When you have a bunch of individuals that are motivated to better themselves and better the people that are around them, then you find that rising tide lifts all ships," Deptula said. "The better they do, the better the organizations do, and the better the actual community does that they live."
The State Chamber of Commerce expects to get a lot of candidates for the summer intern program this year. It is planning to hire a staff member just to work on getting more businesses signed up.
