SUSSEX CO, Del - Wednesday, April 22nd marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, and this year celebrations are looking a little different.
With COVID-19 still a widespread health concern, activities and events that would normally get people outside to clean up and revel in the great outdoors are canceled. DNREC is encouraging Delawareans to join in a number of activities, and challenges on the organization's Facebook page instead.
Nikki Lavoie, DNREC's Chief of Public Affairs, explains that despite now being a difficult time to enjoy the outdoors, there are still plenty of ways to show respect to the planet.
“There's lots of activities you can do at home", said Lavoie. "Whether it’s picking up litter, or recycling, or switching to energy efficient light bulbs and more”.
She continued remarking on the significance of DNREC's online activities saying, “our virtual scavenger hunt encourages Delawareans to learn more about those programs that are available to them and how to take care of our planet.”
Activities include everything from crafts, to photo challenges, to trivia questions. Providing a fun and interactive ways for families at home to learn about the environment and Delaware's state parks.
Topping the list is an online scavenger hunt which includes daily questions posted to the page. Clues can be found either on the Facebook page or on DNREC's website. Winners will be chosen at the end of the week and will be given prizes including free passes to Delaware state parks.
People can also join in on the fun by posting selfies of themselves doing the activities using #EarthDay2020.
While DNREC hopes participants enjoy the activities, the organization hopes that people also take away the importance of positively contributing to the environment.
Lavoie spoke to the need to maintain focus on issues such as climate change saying, “It has never been more important to renew our commitment to protect the environment”.
Live on DNREC's page at the end of the week will be an online pledge that the public is encouraged to sign as a commitment to eco-friendly and sustainable practices.
