DSP Shop for Families in Need in Seaford

SEAFORD, Del.- The holidays can be tough sometimes when it comes to money, that's why the Delaware State is stepping up in a big way, by buying presents for families in need. On Dec. 16, the troopers stopped into the Walmart in Seaford to get gifts for 25 families around the area.  For over 30 years the Delaware State Police has been giving back to families in need over the holidays. Today members the community including the Sussex County Paramedics, and officers from the area grabbed a list and stacked their carts. The Delaware State Police had help from volunteers to shop for those in need. The troopers say it's time to give back. Alice Brumbley, the Troop Commander of Troop 5 said, "We know that we have a lot of need in our community and it's our aim to amplify the joy of the season by giving back a little of what's given to us." Shopping for 25 families is no easy task. That's why help from other areas of the community was important.Including a member of the Sussex County Paramedics. Tom Jefferson, a Sussex County Paramedic said, "It means a lot to me, you know you're able to give back even more than you would normally do, so we got a call they needed help this morning so we were like sure we'll come help."  It can be hard picking out the right gift for someone when you don't know them personally. For some of the volunteers they've been in their shoes before and they say it's nice to come out pick out a few gifts and give back. Mike and Beth Bruette volunteered as well. "We've both kind of been in the same situation growing up and I know how it feels. So to be able to give to somebody who maybe doesn't have a Barbie Doll or a nice outfit to wear is important," Beth said. Throughout the day volunteers even picked out their favorite parts of giving. But it wasn't all serious, toys are for adults too. "If I'm being honest, probably playing with the toys," Mike said.  Delaware State Police covered the cost of all the gifts as they slid across the scanner. Because the troops say the holiday is about coming together Alice Brumbley said, "We're all part of the same team here and all celebrating together so it's just a really beautiful season." Today's focus was shopping, on Wednesday the Troop will wrap the gifts and deliver them throughout the day on Thursday. The troop also mentioned that funding for the gifts came from two organizations.  One of which being our very own Bless Our Children campaign which is always looking for donations.
