MILTON, Del. — What began as a small gathering of people who enjoy crocheting has grown into a nonprofit organization focused on helping others in the community.
The Milton Crochet Club meets every Monday and Tuesday morning at Milton Home Coffee Roastery. Club President Lara Ozden said the group started with a simple goal of sharing a love for crochet and the calming feeling it can bring.
"Yes, so we are started this with a very small idea that loving crochet and how crochet important and gives you such a great feeling that calms you down," Ozden said.
Since its founding, the club has grown rapidly.
"From 30 we became 50, we became 60 and then. 80 and right now 104 people signed up," Ozden said.
The club welcomes both experienced crocheters and beginners, offering classes for people interested in learning the craft.
Earlier this year, the group became a nonprofit organization, allowing it to expand its charitable mission.
"We applied for a nonprofit," Ozden said. "And finally, we recognize by May, first week of May, a hundred percent community community work this is like a charity work so that was a wonderful gift to our club."
According to Ozden, every item made by club members is donated to support charitable efforts throughout the community.
"We learn, we teach, we make friendship, we create beautiful items and I mean I cannot tell enough good things about how crochet is just something happening through it but The main thing is just connection," Ozden said.
The club says it plans to expand its meeting hours as membership continues to grow.
