First Of Two Household Hazardous Waste Collections Held By Lewes Board of Public Works

LEWES, Del.- The Lewes Board of Public Works held the first of two household hazardous waste drop-offs for 2021.

The city board was collecting cleaners, oils, non-alkaline paints and other liquids that need to be properly disposed of. Electronics like computers, televisions, radios and other appliances were also being accepted. Used batteries were also dropped off. The Lewes Police Department was collecting old prescriptions.

Board President D. Preston Lee says any liquids that go down drains and through sewers can harm the city's water.

"If it goes down our sewer pipes or down the storm drains or so forth that's an environmental concern and a major one," Lee said. "It's getting worse through the years but things like this help alleviate that."

The collection has been going on for about eight years. The next drop-off is expected to happen in October.
