Flags Fly in Lewes to Say Thank You to Military and Frontline Heroes

LEWES, Del.- Our national anthem talks about one banner waving, but imagine what 500 of them looks like.

The Lewes-Rehoboth Rotary Club is running their sixth Flags for Heroes fundraiser. The money will go to veteran organizations and other organizations who could use the help such as USO and Fisher House Dover.

"It’s our biggest fundraiser of the year," Lewes-Rehoboth Rotary Club President Chuck Ward said. "We donate everything to local charities here and there is a huge need for that."

The cost is fifty dollars per hero plus a two dollar and fifty cent fee to have a flag put up in their name with a medallion.

The Lewes-Rehoboth Rotary Club is honoring the brave men and women of our military and those who are most important to us in our everyday life. Family members, colleagues, and frontline workers such as retail employees, healthcare providers, and teachers who stepped up during the pandemic.

"It’s the one event that unites all of us regardless of religion or political affiliation as we honor people, not just the veterans but those people in our lives that has had a positive impact on us in some way to be better," Lewes-Rehoboth Flags for Heroes Chairperson Dave Keller said.

"This year’s medallion features a picture of a girl named Olivia reading the name of a hero on a medallion. Her father John Nehrbas served in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom from 2002 to 2007 and is a founder of the American Flag Guardians in Lewes. Each medallion will be mailed to the hero recognized after the two week period the flags will be flying for.
