(LEWES, Del.) - Country, patriotism, and remembrance were the themes of this year's Flags For Heroes dedication ceremony presented by the Lewes - Rehoboth Rotary Club on the eve of Memorial Day weekend.
500 flags have been placed on the Cape Henlopen High School grass. Each, representing those who have served, and sacrificed their lives.
"There's a story behind every single flag. Corporately, of course, we celebrate on Memorial Day. But this event kind of individualizes our memory and remembrance of our heroes," said Nitan Soni, a member of the Rotary Board of Directors.
Delaware State Senator Ernesto Lopez said, "Today we took some time here in the Cape community to remember and celebrate the lives of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for the United States. I feel so humble to represent a Senate district that puts that as a priority."
An emotional Bonny Butler placed her flag in honor of her nephew who lost his life in combat and appreciates the chance to celebrate his life.
"Being proud is probably the biggest emotion. It's an honor to do it. He was a big part of our family. We're all proud of him. We miss him," Butler said.
Living veterans are glad to feel the love by the community
"It's just really good to see the appreciation of not just the young people but older people. It just makes me feel good," said Craig Brown of Lewes.
'It's really an outpouring of thanks and gratitude that they are continuing to be remembered and what they did in service of our country is not forgotten," Soni said.
Normally the flag represents our flags patriotism but today the flags recognize the sacrifice of those who fought to make sure we can be patriotic.
Members of the military, police, and fire department were all honored at today's event.
