DELAWARE - Governor Carney says more vaccines are on the way. The state held a virtual town hall on Tuesday evening in place of their weekly press briefing.
"I want to apologize right up front for those of you who were inconvenienced this weekend at the PODS that we had at the Georgetown DMV and Delaware City DMV,” said Governor Carney.
On Saturday people waited for hours to receive a vaccine.
"We had a lot of lessons learned this past weekend. The weather really had an impact on us, the two locations we went two were different than the Dover DMV so there was less space, we had some technology issues,” said Dr. Karyl Rattay, director of the Delaware Division of Public Health.
The governor says supply is so limited, but more is coming soon.
"Today we had our first White House call … and the best news of the call is each state will be receiving a 16 percent increase in their allotment over the next three weeks,” said the governor.
Dr. Rattay says there are 100,000 people on the waiting list, "We're doing all we can to make opportunities available for a vaccination.”
DPH says it is also planning another large vaccination event this weekend, which will serve at least 2,000 Delaware seniors from the waiting list by appointment only.
"So we do have a focus right now on getting first doses into as many people as possible, and making sure everyone is getting a second dose in a timely period, and when we are offering those second doses we are phasing them in based on risk,” said Dr. Rattay.
She says the first dose provides 52 - 80% protection.
"... Protective against getting infected but even more protective against death and hospitalizations,” she said.
