Grass Roots Rescue Delaware Holds First Adoption Event Since Start of Pandemic

LEWES, Del.-The pandemic initially was a struggle for shelters and rescues to help animals, but Grass Roots Rescue Delaware showcased their available dogs for adoption Saturday.

Grass Roots Rescue Delaware (GRR) hosted its first adoption event since the COVID-19 outbreak. Along with vendors taking part in a craft show, the pups drew a large crowd throughout the day. Many families decided to take a dog home, bringing smiles to the faces of those who fostered the dogs previously.

"We are really excited to be out and be at an event where we can have our dogs, show them off and have people come out and see them, adopt them, and socialize them," GRR Board President Reinie Thompson said." "Time to get back to our new normal of what our adoption process is going to be like."

Although it is a new normal for the volunteers and board members, there is light at the end of the tunnel for the dogs as they will enter a forever home. Volunteers like Amber Brumfield were able to shed some light on why the work they put in is impactful.

"It pays back so much to be a volunteer and especially a foster because you bring these dogs into your home from the terrible conditions that they go through," Brumfield said. "People say I don’t want to give them up. Then, when you see them going to their new home and their tails are wagging and their fur is growing back and they are gaining weight. That part is rewarding and then you know you can save another one."

The puppies that were shown were birthed by some of the bigger dogs in attendance. They were able to see their babies go home to grateful owners, something GRR Founder and Executive Director Karli Crenshaw was happy to see as well.

"We are foster based which means that all the animals we have for adoption are in foster homes with foster families already," Crenshaw said. "We can tell you if they are good with kids, dogs, cats or if they are housebroken or how they might act in situations in a shelter."

Grass Roots Rescue continues to carry out their mission of giving a home to the perfectly imperfect and finding a forever home into the arms of a loving owner.
