Grove Park Dock Access Almost Ready for Public Use

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del.- The Grove Park Canal Front dock is almost ready for people to enjoy, the 1.3 million dollar project took over 10 years to complete. People will be able to travel along the canal from Lewes to Rehoboth with less worries about traffic. A project 10 years in the making and the Grove Park Canal Front Dock is almost ready for people to take advantage of it on any nice day, and a lot of the speakers said they thought this project was never going to happen but with a lot of commitment and a vision, they made it happen. Many people, including some kayakers are excited to soon be able to launch into the canal. The Lewes Rehoboth Canal Improvement Association says the goal of the project was for safe public access along the canal. Mark Carter, an LRCIA Board Member said, "But how do we get folks off the highway? But when you look at that boat there's a lot of seats and that's a great way to bring people into town, they don't deal with parking, they go they economically develop the town by dining, shopping, things like that."  Sussex County, the Town of Lewes, and the City of Rehoboth Beach will be a few places benefitting from the project. Rehoboth Beach Mayor Stan Mills says the project will last for years to come. Stan Mills, the Rehoboth Beach Mayor said, "It's very exciting to finally see this realized and it will be such an enjoyment I believe for generations to come, to come down and sit on the dock, or use the dock to launch kayaks or to take water taxi rides."  The project was a joint effort between public and private sectors, with funding coming from all over the state, and while officials are excited to see their hard work come to life, other people are ready to get their feet wet.  Charlie Garlow, a Kayaker from Rehoboth Beach said, "We're looking forward to many sunny days out here enjoying fishing and maybe some frogs or other aquatic critters, fun stuff to look at and learn about and we're gonna have probably, go on the boat ride have a few beers after a while too, that's a little different from kayaking." Southern Delaware Tourism says the Grove Park Canal Front Dock is a huge contribution to tourism and travel between coastal towns. The dock is not yet open to the public for a few final checks, but the city of Rehoboth Beach says people will be able to enjoy all the benefits of it this summer.
