SUSSEX COUNTY, Del.- No matter who you are going to vote for, you have to admit this is shaping up to be a historic week for Delaware.
In Wilmington on Wednesday, Kamala Harris will accept the Democratic nomination for Vice President. Joe Biden will accept the Democratic nomination for President on Thursday. Retired Political Analyst for WRDE John Brady says this is monumental for Delaware politics.
"This certainly is the biggest political thing since Biden was picked in 2008," Brady said. "It continues to show even in a small state, a diamond in the rough, that Delawareans can rise to high prominence in politics."
Biden has ties to Sussex County. He owns a house in Rehoboth Beach and drops by local stores like Browseabout Books, where he and his wife Jill surprised NBC’s Hoda Kotb at a book signing last summer. Brady says that Delaware will have a spotlight on it as the Democratic National Convention unfolds.
"This year will be the most Delaware-oriented Democratic National Convention in history," Brady said. "So, when they get ready to do things, they will have some montages, they will have some music. And, you will see sights from all over the state of Delaware in the convention. Delaware is a player this year and who knows when Delaware will be a major player again."
If Biden wins he technically won’t be the first president from Delaware. The first person from the first state to actually head the nation used to live in what was known as The Strand in New Castle. Thomas McKean was that person who became President of Congress in July of 1781.
Local republicans don’t want Biden to steal the whole spotlight. Trump supporters took to the streets in Ocean City and to the water in Sussex County on Saturday.
Now, Delaware’s historic week is about to kick off the battle for the White House.
