Lewes City Council Approves Honorific Renaming of West Fourth Street

LEWES, Del.- On Monday night, Lewes City Council approved an honorific renaming of West Fourth Street to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way.

This vote ends months of controversy over the renaming of the street. Back in December, City Council deferred the vote to get more feedback from the public. Mayor Ted Becker says they received 472 responses about the renaming.

Reverend George Edwards of Friendship Baptist Church requested the name change in 2017.

"We love it, we love it. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way. I believe it's something that we've always said that Dr. King, his way was not just for one race of people but all people. And by saying that Dr. Martin Luther King Way and see us connect together, with the people of the community, I believe that's what he would like to see," says Reverend George Edwards.

Mayor Ted Becker says they will move forward with renaming as soon as they can get it through the legislature.

He also says the street plate will be placed above or below the West Fourth Street sign.
