Lewes in Bloom Launches "Bucks for Blooms" Campaign

Lewes in Bloom has planted flowers in twenty locations and the result is stunning as you walk around downtown.

280 volunteers from all over the coast have a passion to lighten up the town and have contributed to five national and international beautification awards.

"I love planting and I love flowers," Fundraising Chair Diane McGreal said. "I love digging in the dirt so that is the starter. But, after that it’s the people and the organization. We have great volunteers. It’s just a great organization to be involved with and then the results are tangible."

With businesses unable to stay on their own feet, some have declined to sponsor Lewes in Bloom at this time. That resulted in the creation of the “Bucks for Blooms” fundraiser. Founder Warren Golde and his team set a high goal and it rests on giant wooden tulip on Second Street.

"We help in the spring with the Lewes Tulip Celebration," Golde said. "We plant 20,000 tulips every year and our goal is to raise 50,000 dollars and we have a tulip thermometer here. We hope to reach the top."

The organization is planning to use the funds to plant more tulips this fall and be in a better place financially next year. Hitting the 50,000 goal will allow them to keep Lewes budding.

"This year because we did not have the money, we had volunteers planting seedlings over at our warehouse and going over there and nurturing for weeks until we were able to plant them around town," Co-Chair Sue Crawford told WRDE. "So, usually we are able to order from the warehouses, different plant warehouses. We couldn't do it this year because we didn’t have the money. We are planning for the future."
