LEWES, Del. - The city of Lewes is partially reopening its beach parking lots on Thursday, May 14th, to give people better access to the beach for limited use.
"With the parking lots being closed has caused some concern for people who like to just go over and look at the beach. and also access, has more and more people are wanting to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather ... so we thought this was a good way to offer that opportunity," says Lewes Mayor Ted Becker.
All spaces at the Roosevelt Inlet will be open. At beach two (the end of Georgia Ave) there will be about 12 to 15 parking spaces available right at the beach. On beach one, off Savannah Road, only the center spaces will be open.
"You will not be able to go all the way over to the beach, and you will not be able to go parallel with the restrooms. Those parking spaces will be cordoned off," says Mayor Becker.
The barriers will be moved and reconfigured on Thursday, May 15th.
Police will continue to patrol the beaches with UTVs and a drone.
"We are going to do a variety of signs that will be placed right where you're parking, and when you come onto the beach just to remind people of the restrictions ... We've had really good compliance by most residents of Lewes so far," says Chief of Police, Tom Spell.
The beach will not be open for regular use, and the bathrooms will remain closed.
