SUSSEX COUNTY, Del. - On Wednesday, the Sussex County Library Advisory Board held a meeting to discuss reopening, library service throughout the pandemic, and library construction for fiscal year 2022.
Lewes Library is preparing to offer browsing and computer use by appointment only as soon as next week.
"That probably has to be the number one thing people miss the most about the library. They just want to come in and browse … People will be able to call or email us and set up a time to come. It will be a 20 minute window where they can browse in the library and pick up whatever they want,” said Rebecca Lowe Adult Program Coordinator for Lewes Library.
At Lewes Library, to ensure social distancing during computer use, patrons are only allowed to sit at every other seat.
Lowe said computer access is important because, "you have folks who need to be able to get in access their email, fill out a job application anything like that.”
Kathy Graybeal, Sussex County Librarian, said “The county libraries are continuing curbside and will have computer appointments through the entire day, limited number of course, six feet apart, etc. Hopefully things will be in place for us to start that next Monday.”
Milton Public Library and Rehoboth Beach Public Library also plan to offer appointment only computer use. Milton Library tells WRDE, those interested in using computers can begin to make their appointments now by calling (302) 684-8856. Graybeal says some libraries have already opened for usage such as Seaford and Bridgeville.
“Those who don't have hardware have not been served so that's why most of us are taking that first step towards computer use,” said Graybeal.
Graybeal also added feedback from current customer service has been incredibly positive, "the curbside was awesome that really answered an immediate need.”
Libraries like Seaford, Selbyville, and Laurel have been answering other needs such as offering meals and produce.
The advisory board also discussed library construction in fiscal year 2022 by creating and utilizing outdoor spaces.
"Since it was a light year ... we were talking about the use of outdoor spaces particularly for outdoor learning,” said Graybeal.
Most libraries in Sussex plan to roll out these new changes by Monday, September 21st, and over the course of the week. Check with your local library to find out what kind of services will be offered and when they will be available.
