LEWES, Del.- Amid staffing shortages felt across the county, a holiday weekend was the boost that businesses needed.
The Station On Kings offers homemade baked goods, breads, and items at its cafe. Owner Leisa Berlin saw products being bought in bunches by people who came in.
"We had a lot of tourists down from the city," Berlin said. "We had a lot of large families. A lot of people coming into the bakery and buying large quantities for breakfast and the mornings are extremely busy here."
The kitchen is closing on Tuesdays due to a low amount of staff but people can still buy pastries from the bakery and drinks from the cafe.
Although Labor Day is the unofficial end of summer, Seagreen bicycle does not expect any decrease in rentals or tune-ups for at least the next month. Mechanic Skip Dunbar says having the trails nearby and tourists coming into town is a huge boost especially on holiday weekends.
"Rental places are up and owners are back in town," Dunbar said. "For here, they are getting their bicycles to get re-fixed from getting used a fair amount over the summer."
Pedego Electric Bikes opened July 1st on Kings Highway and had its second taste of a holiday this past weekend. Store Manager Lenny Richardson says he and his staff are trying to make a good first impression for those who live in the area and for visitors.
"This has been a little bit more busy than a normal weekend," Richardson said. "But we've had good foot traffic. Locals and visitors you know vacationers. Everybody just stops in and sees our sign. They've heard of Pedego before or sometimes they haven't and they just come in and like what they see."
New business or well-established business, the holiday was a spark with hopefully even more fireworks to come.
The consensus seems to be that if there's great weather and people are coming to Lewes that business will continue to boom into the fall which is something local business owners can smile about.
