GEORGETOWN, Del - 1,200 boxes of fresh food including produce, meat, and dairy products were brought to Discover Church in Georgetown, courtesy of the USDA and Vincent Farms of Laurel. The farm is working with Love INC. of Mid-Delmarva to feed families across Sussex County.
Pastor Curtis Jones shared that he was eager for Discover Church to get involved in the effort explaining that giving back is at the core of the congregation's identity. "Obviously we meet on Sunday's for spiritual, but at the same time we want to make sure that we're impacting the community in other ways," said Pastor Jones.
The project aims to get food to all hungry families, but particularly to shut-ins and those who have been unable to benefit from similar pantries. Code Purple Food Director for Love INC., Kaytra MacDonald explained that at these events people are encouraged to pick up food for those in and outside of their homes.
"Pick up your neighbor, pick up your friend, bring everybody with you," said MacDonald having personally delivered food to over 40 home-bound families herself in the last week.
MacDonald expressed how gratifying it has been for her to serve the community during a time when many are facing hardship, and that doing so with the support of a local food provider like Vincent Farms means even more. "It's a blessing to partner with anyone that's local so that everyone can just come together as one and help each other," she said.
John Price, a farmhand who drove the truckload of goods from Laurel to Georgetown called being part of Friday's experience rewarding saying, "I hope that the people who get these boxes of food besides the nourishment they know that people care. The people of this church care and I personally care".
