Local Mother-Daughter Duo Creates New Dessert Business, Offering Unique Treats for Valentine's Day

DEWEY BEACH, Del.- This weekend, making Valentine's Day special is as easy as pie. Local mother-daughter duo, Joan and Kasen Donald, started a dessert business, Piece Out Pies.

The family started the new business just a few months ago.

"Cooking has always been my relief. I come home at the end of the day and I'm like, I've got to cook. This makes me feel better," said Joan Donald.

What started as a way to stay busy during the pandemic, turned into a business.

"While COVID did cause a divide for a lot of people it brought us closer together," said Kasen Donald.

Kasen remembers sitting in the booths and coloring at Gary's in Dewey Beach, while her mother worked there years ago. Now, the bar lets them use the kitchen for all of their baking.

This Valentine's Day, you can order pies and cookies for pickup or delivery. Some are traditional recipes like sugar cookies and apple pie. Others, are more unique.

"We are still trying to work on our Snickerdoodle with Old Bay, but it's got the Old Bay and anyone who likes Old Bay will enjoy it," said Joan.

If your pie is for someone special, for just three dollars extra you can get a personalized Valentine delivered with it.

"Just being able to provide a service to people at this time and do something to put a smile on their face," said Kasen.

The duo hopes to open a storefront someday soon. But right now they are keeping busy spreading sweets and smiles across Southern Delaware.
