Medical Professionals Warn People Of Heat Exhaustion & Heat Stroke Symptoms As Heat Wave Comes In

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del.- It’s only the beginning of a sunny but extreme heat wave and already the sun is getting to people in Sussex County.

It brings to light taking precautions for your health and looking for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. The Rehoboth Beach Patrol talks about them every single morning and Medic Yulia Strohmeyer there are many symptoms to look for.

"Weakness, headache, people can feel fatigue, cool, clammy, sweaty," Strohmeyer said. "So if you feel like this, remove yourself from the heat right away. Put a cool towel or something cool on the back of your neck and under your armpits just so your body can release the heat."

Rehoboth Beach Patrol has treated people who have passed out due to heat or dehydration this summer. Strohmeyer says that there are times that the body can react to heat quickly and other times not so quickly.

Some beachgoers were well-prepared applying sunscreen, hitting the ocean, and grabbing a sweet treat. Gavin & Mason Andrews of New York have concerns of what the heat could cause.

"I overheat pretty fast so I think that’s going to be brutal on me," Gavin said.

"The aftermath," Mason said. "The torrential downpour because the universe balances itself out so usually when it gets this hot it’s really bad in the rain department."

Some people who are outdoors in the heat are gardeners. Manager of Wharton’s Garden Center Mindy Martin says that her staff is pacing themselves between the sun and the shade. But she is not concerned about working outside over the next few days.

"I just pace myself," Martin said. "I don’t rush into anything . I don’t rush up and down the aisles. I just pace myself and I think we’re so used to it. We work outside every day."

There are others who also deal with working outside day in and day out.
