Mills Landing Residents' Screen Doors Removed Due To Safety & Maintenance Problems

LEWES, Del.- Each apartment in the Savannah West Square complex is down to one front door instead of two. A process that has seniors living there upset that the storm doors will be gone.

"It's a safety issue," Laraine Hofmann said. "We're seniors. This is a senior complex and we don't feel safe unless we have this door protection between our main door and the storm door."

Renters also see it as an amenity to be able to let fresh air in and look outside on nice days. Resident of ten and half years Helen M. Capodanno says this isn't the first time something has been taken away.

"This might be my last place to live here and I was happy when I moved here, it was perfect," Capodanno said. "And now all of a sudden they are taking one thing after another away from us."

The MHDC says that people living in the complex were informed that the doors would be removed. In fact, a couple of doors were removed previously. Vice President Christina Stanley says they present many problems.

"We've been having a lot of trouble with them," Stanley said. "One of the things too from a safety standpoint, it was problematic with the screen doors so we're removing them. Also, from a maintenance standpoint we were having difficulty."

Renters met with Regional Manager of East Coast Property Management Mark Bacon Monday night, but the decision stayed the same. The neighbors say they've been told if they want a new storm door they have to buy it themselves.

Two different safety issues, one on each side. The residents living here say the doors were a barrier from people they don't know while the housing corporation says the doors were old and unsafe.
