Mountaire Farms Distributes Meals Days Before Christmas

SELBYVILLE, Del.- Rocking around the Christmas tree is fun especially after a satisfying meal.

Less fortunate families on Delmarva will be able to have a nice dinner this year courtesy of Mountaire Farms. Boxes full of a roaster chicken, sides, and dessert were picked up by members of churches and non-profits who will be getting the meals to those who need them.

Delaware State Senator David L. Wilson joined other volunteers to help out with packing the food. He says meal giveaways like these will help many people who need them this holiday season.

"The job that Mountaire does for feeding the needy and the people that are in this type of time, everyone is needing food," Wilson said. "It’s just remarkable. I try to help as much as I can as volunteers."

There was an assembly line of about 40 volunteers with three different crews. One to put the boxes together, another to pack the boxes with food, and a third loading the cars and trucks. All of the volunteers followed COVID-19 safety rules including mask wearing and a temperature check before entering the warehouse. Mountaire Farms Director of Communications/Community Relations Cathy Bassett ensured everyone was safe.

"We’ve got hand washing stations and hand sanitizers everywhere," Bassett said. "Just trying to stay vigilant about that. We were hoping that it wasn’t going to be a factor here by Christmas, but it is unfortunately."

The amount of help may be lower than usual, but the mission of providing service before self continues to be accomplished. Mountaire is putting a bow on meal distributions for 2020, but very soon 2021 will be here as they prepare for "Easter for Thousands".
