New CDC Mask Guidance Has Some Business Owners Concerned About Variants, Others Are Not Concerned

DELAWAREThe fight against COVID-19 takes a U-turn.

Vaccinated people are now recommended to wear masks indoors with the Delta variant causing increases in positive cases.

During a briefing Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki says this is a more impactful coronavirus strain and that the CDC is doing what it is supposed to.

"The reality is we are dealing with a much different strain of this virus than we were even earlier in the spring back in May when the masking guidance was done provided by the CDC at that time," Psaki said. "That is their job."

The new recommendations could impact businesses and their customers. Some people who are fully vaccinated still choose to wear masks.

Owner of The Mercantile Lisa Falzarano says she is considering putting a mask mandate back on.

"It protects ourselves, each individual and I have a lot of customers that come in from different states all around Delaware," Falzarano said. "And I think it would be safer for me to have that because we have so much interaction with visitors and people on vacation."

We spoke with other businesses and locals who believe that it's time to move on and believe the new guidance is based on misinformation.

Falzarano also says whatever the rules are, compliance is key.

"They appreciate us having following the rules and staying cleanly and all that and we really have tried our best to follow along with what they say is the safest," Falzarano said.

The CDC says vaccines are the best protection against the variant. It also says that all students, teachers and staff should wear a mask at school regardless of their vaccination status. Delaware and Maryland have not changed any guidance yet.
