(OCEAN CITY, Md.)- Ocean City police are currently investigating the death of an unidentified male after lifeguards located a body in the ocean off 127th Street.
On Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2016, at approximately 4:20 p.m. Ocean City Beach Patrol lifeguards located a deceased male in the ocean near 127th Street after a citizen reported seeing an object floating offshore. The body showed signs of being in the water for an extended period of time.
Detectives of the Ocean City Police Department Criminal Investigation Division Major Crimes Unit responded to the scene and an active investigation is underway to determine the identity of the male and the circumstances surrounding his death.
Beach-goers Wednesday say they're still left with many unanswered questions.
"It makes me wonder was it an accident? Or was it done on purpose? Was it foul play?" asked Susan Ward of Harford County, Maryland.
But Police say until the autopsy report is complete, they won't have any answers.
"It's still too soon to determine that right now. An autopsy is being done today, so once that's complete we'll have way more information," said Lindsay Richard, Ocean City Police Public Affairs Specialist.
The body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner where Richard says an autopsy was conducted Wednesday. Interestingly, Richard says there are currently no known missing persons reported in the area.
Anyone that may have been in the area in the last 36 to 48 hours and believes they have information related to the case is asked to contact the Ocean City Police Department at 410-723-6610. Callers may remain anonymous.
