LEWES, Del.-Â In the first town, there is more than one way to get downtown but some of them are blocked off due to road work.
First, New Road is closed in order to connect the street to a new roundabout. New curbs, drains, and sidewalks are going in in conjunction with new apartments being built.
Owner of Lewes Cycle Sports Brian Kellman lives off of New Road but has had more trouble getting his children to school and daycare through Savannah Road which also has work being done.
"We're trying to get out to the same place on Route 1," Kellman said. "Going through Savannah it's an extra ten minutes so not terrible as long as you know about it. But a lot of the signage out there fully doesn't explain there's construction going on until you hit the construction.
Owner of Blooming Boutique Michiko Seto says the sidewalk work on Savannah has caused her delays.
"I was heading over to my other stores in Long Neck and I was thinking it was only 3:30, 4 o'clock on a weekday and next thing you know I'm crawling five miles an hour so it took a little longer than I anticipated and I wasn't aware that it was going on at that time," Seto said.
The Savannah Road work is set to last until January 28 but Seto thinks it will be worth it.
"Sidewalks are good because everybody's walking, biking around here," Seto said. "It's becoming that kind of a town so I think it's a great idea."
DelDOT could not be reached Friday for comment about these projects but according to the agency’s project plans, New Road is expected to be finished by November 24, weather permitting.
Short term headaches for hopefully long term solutions in Lewes.
