MILFORD, Del. - A temporary emergency variance for air quality has been issued to Perdue Foods in Milford to allow for the construction and use of a renter boiler, according to the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control.

The department says that the plant discovered a critical failure in one of their boilers last Sunday, rendering it unusable. They say the plant processes around 240,000 chickens every day.

According to the department, their Division of Air Quality expects to issue a temporary air permit early next week, allowing them to use the renter for 90 says.

Officials say the variance requires Perdue Foods to develop a boiler maintenance plan for the Milford plant. The department says it also requires the facility to solidify a commitment to continuous compliance with Delaware's environmental regulations.
