(REHOBOTH BEACH, Del.) Nicola Pizza is facing complaints after a family said they were turned away because they could not bring their son's medical stroller in the restaurant.
An e-mail sent to WRDE News said the stroller the family pushed was necessary for the young boy, who has a serious medical condition. The family said the stroller was much like a wheelchair for their son.
Owner of Nicola Pizza, Nicholas Caggiano told WRDE News his side of the story today.
"We are not allowed to have strollers in the restaurant because of fire codes," Caggiano said. "the hostess didn't know the stroller was used for a medical condition. She was just doing what she was told."
He told WRDE News his daughter was born with Spina Bifita, a birth defect affecting a child's spinal cord. He said she has been in a wheelchair her entire life.
"I feel so bad for these people," Caggiano said. "I've been through this with my child. I've lived it."
He said he would never turn away a customer because of a disability, and the situation was a misunderstanding.
Nicola Pizza reached out to the family personally after the incident. They also apologized to their customers publicly on Facebook.
WRDE News tried to reach out to the family who was affected several times, but have not heard back.
