Nadal wrote on X that “Tennis loses one of its great journalists." Gauff opened her news conference as the defending champion at the French Open with a statement about Fendrich. She says “he was someone I always enjoyed having conversations with. One of my favorite faces to see in the room." Fendrich died Thursday after being diagnosed with cancer in February. He was 55. Fendrich had been AP’s tennis writer since 2002. Fendrich was based in Washington and the city’s football, baseball and hockey teams also extended their condolences.
