OperaDelaware Holds Pop-Up Concert at Bayhealth Hospital

MILFORD, Del. - On Tuesday afternoon, OperaDelaware took it's mobile opera cart to Sussex County to perform for healthcare workers at Bayhealth Hospital.  "We're just trying to bring people a musical hug if you will," said OperaDelaware General Director, Brendan Cooke. Months into the pandemic, doctors, nurses, and hospital staff are still hard at work. Tuesday's 15-minute performance was a way to spread a little joy during these difficult times. "We just wanted to say thanks to our healthcare workers, and it seems like a great place to roll up in front of a hospital sing a couple tunes and say thank you," said Cooke. The performers came from Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Lancaster to showcase their talents to an appreciative crowd. As the singers performed, OperaDelaware provided live translations that the audience could read from their phones.  "Music truly heals the soul and to listen to them, and wow, I didn't speak any of their languages but I could feel the passion in the music. And to look around at our staff that have worked so hard for so many months, to get to enjoy time to listen to that, it made me feel good that they get to enjoy the moment too," said Brenda Blain, Chief Nurse Executive and Senior Vice President of Nursing at Bayhealth.  OperaDelaware was in the midst of planning for its 75th anniversary festival, "which was 3 operas that involved over 200 performers and volunteers, but the pandemic had other ideas, so we started focusing on if you can't do what you do, you do what you can," said Cooke. So the group began outdoor performances for hospitals and nursing homes, bringing happiness through music.  Cooke said the group made another stop in Dover on Tuesday, and are heading up to Wilmington for another performance on Thursday.
