Plane Crashes Near Chesapeake Bay Bridge, Kills Two

(STEVENSVILLE, Md.)- A small rental plane from Delaware crashes near the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tuesday afternoon, according to Maryland State Police. The crashed killed two unidentified people, police said.

Authorities received a call for service at 12:44 p.m. Tuesday, April 19. Responding officers arrived to a field and found debris from an apparent plane crash on Kent Island. The crash scene is near the Bay Bridge Airport, which is east of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

Maryland State Police said a man and a woman were killed in the crash. The two were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities say say the two-seater aircraft, a Van's Aircraft RV-12, burst into flames when it hit the ground.

A flight school that said its aircraft was involved in the crash released a statement about the crash, saying, "An aircraft associated with Chesapeake Sport Pilot was in an accident that resulted in fatalities. We send our sincerest thought and prayers to the friends and family of those involved in this tragedy. At this time, details of the accident are still emerging and we will cooperate fully with the NTSB so they can have a thorough investigation, which will hopefully help prevent this type of horrible accident in the future.
