Proposed Mileage Tax Could Impact Delaware Drivers

(SUSSEX CTY., De.) - Delaware drivers are reacting to a potential new tax that could charge people for the miles they drive.

One Frankford resident says she's infuriated. "I don't think they should change the tax gon the gas. It should just be at the pumps. That's bad enough."

She thinks it's an invasion of privacy. "It's taking away from our rights. It should stay as it is, and they get enough of our money."

Delaware is only one state trying to figure out how to charge motorists a fee based on the miles the travel. It comes at the expense of the traditional gas tax.

People with fuel efficient vehicles aren't entirely against the idea, if it will save them money in the long run.

Jason Saldana of Milford, says, "Well, it just depends if it benefits me. Um, right now I'm paying roughly 40 dollars a gallon, so if it comes out to be paying 30 dollars or less than 40, I'm with it."

For some drivers, putting the pump down could mean burning an even bigger hole in their wallets.

Ryan Smith of Millsboro, loves joyriding in his truck. However, he says, with 12 miles to the gallon, it will definitely burn a big hole in his pockets-- especially with gas prices being so low. "It would really stink if we had to pay taxes per mile because I probably drive 15 thousand miles per year, and that's even more than what I wanna pay."

If DelDot is permitted the grant, planning for the new "user-based" revenue will begin in October.
