Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney campaigned for national unity in oil-rich Alberta as advance voting was underway in a referendum that could set the province on a path toward a future vote on separation from Canada. Monday’s vote is not a direct referendum on independence. Albertans will decide whether to remain in Canada or instruct the government to begin the legal process toward a future separation referendum. Carney says it couldn't be worse timing for the vote. Carney did not mention U.S. President Donald Trump in his brief remarks to volunteers on the pro Canada side, but his warning came as Trump’s trade war and repeated threats to make Canada the 51st state have strained relations between the longtime allies and added economic uncertainty.
