The number of confirmed Ebola cases in Congo has surged past 8,000 as the country struggles with a shortage of health workers. The new statistics were released Sunday. The disease has spread to new health zones with 3,901 deaths reported as of Sept. 26. The World Health Organization has highlighted the seriousness of the outbreak and noted challenges in timely case detection and patient care. WHO said last week that the country is running out of health workers. Strikes have occurred because of payment delays. Some areas are showing improvement but the disease is spreading further. The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo virus and it has outpaced previous regional outbreaks. Trials for treatment are underway.
