One of Haiti’s most powerful gangs says it has reached out to a state agency responsible for dismantling armed gangs in a push for “peace, stability and national reconciliation.” In a three-page statement sent to The Associated Press on Friday, the 400 Mawozo gang stresses that “dialogue is not a capitulation,” but rather an act “to preserve human lives.” The gang says it plans to participate in a peaceful demonstration later this month “to lay the groundwork for a national dialogue and peace negotiation process.” An official with Haiti’s National Commission for Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

The move Friday follows a former student’s lawsuit saying she was gang raped at a fraternity house in 2024. The vote followed weeks of debate among professors over whether Cornell President Michael Kotlikoff or other administrators handled the allegations properly and whether they’ve done enough to combat campus sexual misconduct. The vote of no confidence is largely symbolic, but supporters of the resolution said they hope it will pressure university trustees to urgently address longstanding institutional failures.
Former NFL star Antonio Brown has pleaded guilty to aggravated assault with a firearm in connection with a 2025 shooting in Miami. Brown entered the plea to the reduced charge in state court in Miami on Friday. The All-Pro wide receiver avoids prison time after initially being charged with attempted murder. Police said Brown grabbed a handgun from a security staffer and fired two shots at a man he had been in a fistfight with earlier. Brown maintained he was defending himself from an attack as others were trying to steal jewelry from him. The 38-year-old spent 12 years in the NFL, most of it with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Thomas Markle, the father of Prince Harry’s wife Meghan, has been arrested by federal agents in Florida on charges related to child sexual abuse material. That's according to people familiar with the matter who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to publicly discuss the case. Thomas Markle was taken into custody near Tampa. Meghan Markle has said she is “deeply distressed” about allegations that a collection of child sexual abuse images were found at her father’s former home. She has also revealed that a letter containing “troubling allegations” about him was sent to police in London in 2018.
Authorities say an officer in Lakewood, Colorado, has been killed and three others wounded during a firefight aboard a transit bus that ended with police fatally shooting the gunman. A police spokesperson said the officers responded to a call about a suspicious person attempting to get on a public bus Thursday evening. Police say the man opened fire when officers got on the bus. The three surviving officers are in stable condition at local hospitals. A bystander also was injured, but it wasn't clear how. Their condition was unknown. Authorities say the gunman may have been involved in a hit-and-run earlier that day.
The leader of a Kenyan doomsday cult linked to the deaths of hundreds of people has been sentenced to 200 years in prison for the murders of 191 people. The High Court in Kenya’s coastal city of Mombasa issued the sentence on Friday for Pastor Paul Mackenzie. He was convicted of murdering 190 children and one adult after he ordered his followers to starve themselves to death in order to meet Jesus. Justice Diana Kavedza said that Mackenzie bore the “primary criminal culpability” for relocating his followers to a remote location and ordering them to fast to death.
A 90-year-old Holocaust survivor has died almost a year after she was wounded during the massacre of 15 people at a Sydney Hanukkah celebration. Romanian-born Eva Geller died Thursday night in a Sydney hospital, officials said Friday. She was one of around 40 people wounded when two gunmen allegedly inspired by the Islamic State group opened fire on a crowd at Bondi Beach on Dec. 14. Fifteen victims aged 10 to 87 died. One of the gunmen, Sajid Akram, was shot dead by police at the scene. Rabbi Aron Moss said Geller had been admitted to the hospital several times in recent weeks due to surgery complications.
Four men named in a former Cornell University student’s lawsuit are joining a co-defendant’s effort to block New York’s attorney general from leading a reopened criminal investigation into the woman’s gang rape allegations. That is according to court filings on Thursday. The co-defendant’s lawyers said the men agreed to be added to a court petition that seeks Attorney General Letitia James’ removal from the case because of social media posts she made prior to her involvement in which she condemned the alleged assault and expressed support for the accuser. James’ office declined to comment.
A Florida sheriff says a gunman who killed a woman before being fatally shot by a security guard at Citibank’s sprawling office complex in Tampa targeted the campus because he was angry over a $2,500 debt collection. Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said Thursday that about three hours before the shooting, 35-year-old Jacob Pearson called an attorney affiliated with Citibank and threatened violence if a court hearing over the debt wasn’t canceled. Chronister says Pearson drove from his home in Orlando to Tampa, crashed his car through a fence at Citibank’s campus and plowed into a courtyard. The sheriff said Pearson shot the first employee he saw.
