Hungary's Péter Magyar has taken his oath of office to become the country's new prime minister, ending Viktor Orbán’s autocratic 16-year rule. Magyar's center-right Tisza party defeated Orbán’s nationalist-populist Fidesz in a landslide win last month. On Saturday, Magyar entered parliament with 140 other Tisza representatives, controlling 141 of 199 seats. Orbán’s coalition now holds 52 seats. Magyar, a former Orbán insider, has vowed to tackle corruption and unlock frozen European Union funds to boost Hungary’s economy. He promises to repair ties with the EU and restore Hungary’s place among Western democracies.

The U.S. Supreme Court has escalated a nationwide redistricting war by removing one of the few remaining limits on partisan gerrymandering. The decision gutted a key provision of the Voting Rights Act that affected how states draw congressional maps, a powerful tool for influencing elections. Redistricting conflicts are exacerbating a winner-take-all style of politics that has strained American democracy in recent years. There has been extreme rhetoric, political violence and attempts to reshape elections. The rules and norms that once helped smooth over an unruly country’s vast differences have given way to a race for power at all costs.

South Korean appeals court on Wednesday sentenced ousted President Yoon Suk Yeol to seven years in prison for resisting arrest and bypassing a legitimate Cabinet meeting before his brief imposition of martial law in December 2024. The conviction for obstruction of justice and other charges comes on top of a life sentence he has already received on rebellion charges stemming from his baffling authoritarian push, which triggered the most serious crisis for the country’s democracy in decades.
