Thunderstorms with heavy rain have caused flash flooding in parts of north Georgia and inundated the small town of McCaysville with high water. Emergency teams used boats to rescue residents overnight Wednesday into Thursday. The National Weather Service said Thursday morning that storms dropped 3 to 5 inches of rain in McCaysville, leading to life-threatening flooding. The McCaysville Police Chief told local television station Atlanta News First that more than 30 rescues were conducted overnight. The Fannin County Emergency Management Agency says swift water rescue teams evacuated residents, but many remained stranded Thursday morning. The agency warned that floodwaters remain extremely dangerous.

Another round of heavy rains and flash flooding has triggered evacuations along rivers in parts of Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Arizona. The water's receding now in one Colorado tourist town, but other rivers are still rising. The San Juan River crested Sunday night in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, reaching close to a level that devastated the town back in 1911. The flooding has closed some Election Day polling sites in the Southwest, forcing changes in some voting plans. Arizona officials ordered evacuations along Oak Creek in Sedona, and in Tucson, Arizona, a meteorologist said they're getting several months’ worth of rain in just a couple of days.

Officials in Sedona, Arizona, on Sunday ordered residents in areas near Oak Creek to leave immediately as flood waters were rising rapidly and multiple people were already trapped in their homes. In southwestern Colorado, officials in Pagosa Springs warned in a Facebook post of potentially catastrophic flooding as the San Juan River is forecast to crest at more than 19 feet Sunday night. Pagosa Springs officials say anyone in low-lying areas along the San Juan, Rio Blanco, Navajo, and Piedra Rivers should head to a designated shelter at a local church.

Russian and Ukrainian officials say some residents have been evacuated from the war-ravaged city of Oleshky. The evacuations Friday came on the fourth day of the most significant truce since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began 4½ years ago. Ukrainian lawmaker Davyd Arakhamia says the evacuees are traveling by bus to the city of Anapa in southern Russia then will flying to Belarus and cross the border into northern Ukraine. Russia's lead representative on the mission says residents who want to live in Russia have also been evacuated. The White House says the humanitarian mission and ceasefire were brokered following negotiations involving U.S. first lady Melania Trump.
El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele says he has launched a military operation to rescue four Salvadoran aviation technicians kidnapped by gangs in Haiti. The announcement comes three days after gangs attacked an armored vehicle in Croix-des-Bouquets, Port-au-Prince. Bukele demands the hostages be returned alive and unharmed. He warns of a more forceful response if they are not released. The four are aviation technicians, and the Salvadoran mission in Haiti focuses on medical evacuations. The U.N.-backed force continues to fight gangs in the area. Gang violence has displaced nearly 1.5 million people in Haiti in recent years.
