Luigi Mangione’s guilty plea to federal stalking charges in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson resolves one of two cases against him. He is set to go on trial for state murder charges on Sept. 8. Thompson was shot outside a New York City hotel on Dec. 4, 2024, while heading to an investor conference. Mangione was arrested five days later at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania. The case has seen numerous legal twists, including the dismissal of terrorism charges and a judge taking the death penalty off the table. Mangione briefly planned a psychiatric defense but abandoned it. He pleaded guilty in the federal case on Friday.
