The Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Navi Pillay has highlighted longstanding tensions between Israel and global institutions pledged to uphold international law. Pillay, a veteran jurist, led a U.N.-backed investigation accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza, something it vehemently denies. She has served at the highest levels of international organizations established after the Second World War to prevent a recurrence of its horrors. Israel, founded in the wake of the Holocaust, says those institutions are biased against it and has largely refused to cooperate with them.
