Immigration and Customs Enforcement is moving to equip officers with body cameras in the next two months but the public should not expect to quickly see footage of every critical incident. ICE’s body-worn camera policy says it will publicly release video of shootings and other encounters in which its agents cause death or serious injury only after determining it is in the “best interests of the agency” to do so. One expert on body camera usage says ICE's director will have broad discretion to release recordings that reflect well on ICE and can push to keep others secret. ICE says body cameras have been sent to more than half its field officers and the rest will receive them by the end of September.

Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick has received a new award from the American Civil Liberties Union recognizing contributions to American thought and culture. Kaepernick and rock star Bruce Springsteen were honored Friday night with the ACLU Ralph Ellison Award for Defenders of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties in the Arts, Business, Science and Sports. The honor comes a decade after Kaepernick knelt during the national anthem in protest against police violence and racial inequality. Springsteen closed the event with a solo rendition of “Streets of Minneapolis.” He and Kaepernick were honored as part of an awards ceremony hosted by actress Laverne Cox.
